Liz Sutton, CEO / President

bio_liz_sutton_sutton_and_associatesLiz Sutton, President of Alabama World Travel, a Virtuoso agency, and Sutton & Associates, has been in the travel industry for 35 years, since 1977. Liz and her husband Bill, opened and developed three new divisions, to include Cruise Concepts, Vacation Concepts and Sutton & Associates, which offers customized travel incentives and meetings for organizations.


Liz is a Certified Travel Consultant and earned her CTC in 1982. She served as Chairperson for The Travel Institute (formerly Institute of Certified Travel Agents). In 1985, Liz was chosen by the National Organization of Jaycees as one of the FIVE Most Outstanding Jaycees in America. She was named one of the Most Powerful Women in Travel to Travel Agent Magazine in May 1999. She has served as the spokesperson for American Express by appearing in a national full-page ad campaign for American Express for all leading travel magazines across the country in 1998/1999. In addition to this recognition, Liz is recognized as a national leadership and motivational speaker for other industries. Liz was named one of the Top 125 Super Agents by Travel & Leisure Magazine for 2002-2011.


Liz has been very active in her community. She served as a 2nd Term Board Member for the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce 2009-2011, past Chairperson for the Transportation Task Force and past Chairperson for Program and Training Development of the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce. She is a Charter member of the Small Business Resource Center, Point of Light award committee member and has been the Top Producer for the Total Resource Campaign for the Chamber of Commerce for 2006 to 2009. She is a member of Committee 100 where she served on the Board of Governors from 2008-2011. She has also been active with the Montgomery Home Builders Association, Officer of the Montgomery Jaycees, Twice Paul Harris Fellow and member of Rotary International and Rotary Charity Ball selection committee chair, 2010. She has won the highest award given any associate member of the Montgomery Home Builders Association as “Associate of the Year.” She was one of the “Biggest Rats in Town” and raised over $12,000 for the American Cancer Society. Liz is founder and member of Partners in Catholic Education in Montgomery. She is actively involved with her Church, local schools, and Alumni.


Liz was a finalist for the 2011 Maury D. Smith Award for Excellence in Professional Ethics and nominated “Man of the Year.” Recently Liz participated on a select committee with National Geographic Editor and Columnist, National Geographic Traveler Chairman, World Travel and Tourism Council -Tourism for Tomorrow Awards, Costas Christ and Virtuoso in selecting a travel supplier for the Inaugural Virtuoso Sustainable Leadership Award.


Liz has also served the travel industry by serving on many Advisory Boards, including the American Express Advisory Board, Royal Caribbean Travel Agency Advisory Board, Walt Disney World Advisory Board, Radisson Hotel Advisory Board, Premier Cruise Lines, Travel Counselor Advisory Board, Travel Agent Magazine and currently serves on the Travel + Leisure Magazine Advisory Board. Liz is a member of “Site” and active in the Southeast Chapter and Co-chaired” Share the Love Conference”, 2011.


Liz and her agency have received numerous national awards and recognition for their accomplishments and leadership. AWT Alabama World Travel won the coveted and prestigious COSBE Award given by the Montgomery area Chamber of Commerce for the Most Outstanding Small Business in the Montgomery Area for 1993. AWT has also been awarded CLIA’s Revnes Award for their Outstanding Showcase of Cruises Show in February 1995. Alabama World Travel; received the 1995 Gemseter of the Year Award for Best Travel Agency in the Country, presented by GEM Consortium. Carnival Cruise Lines has bestowed their coveted “Winners Circle” Award annually since 1997 to 2008. AWT is currently an exclusive member of the Virtuoso Travel Network.


Liz was born in Montgomery, Alabama to Jim & Edna Sadie. She is one of 9 children. Liz is married to Bill Sutton and they have three children: Kristin 22 years, Thomas 21 years, and Joseph 17 years. 




Basia Border, Business Development and Assistant to the President

bio_basia_border_sutton_and_associatesBasia moved from Canada to the United States in 1999 and has lived in Texas, Wisconsin and Alabama and much prefers the southern climate, generous hospitality and extra months on the golf course. She brings with her a bit of an accent, which we adore! She has travelled through much of Europe, explored Canada from east to the west and has been fortunate to see much of the United States. A highlight of her travels included a trip to her family’s homeland of Poland. Basia graduated from Queen’s University in Kingston Ontario and worked in Community and Social Services for 12 years. She later went back to school, worked as a Law Clerk for an Oil & Gas Company in San Antonio, and went on to join a Sustainable Engineering group out of the Milwaukee area. She has learned a great deal about the travel industry since joining Sutton & Associates and feels like she travels a bit each day. Basia has been privileged to sit on the board of directors of a Women’s Shelter, has volunteered in the Community Services office at her church and tutors in the ESL (English as a second language program). Any extra time she spends at her son’s school sporting events.




Laura Brelsford, Program Manager

bio_laura_brelsford_sutton_and_associatesLaura has always traveled with an open heart and a creative mind to bring home the memories and treasures to everyday life and to the private events and weddings she has orchestrated! Her travels have lead her all over the globe to study the history and cultures of Costa Rica, the Caribbean, Spain, Morocco, Italy, France, Greece, and the Mid-Western and Southern United States. It was only a matter of time before her passion for the world and her keen eye for events became the perfect match! Laura’s goal at Sutton & Associates is to take the client’s vision and enhance it beyond their expectations; to give every event and experience, from the registration to fireworks, that extra level of attention. When Laura is not planning incentives, she and her husband are spending time with 70+ college student as fraternity and sorority advisors. Almost weekly they spend time teaching these young men and women how to excel in their personal and professional lives.



Laurie Kruger, Program Manager

Laurie_PhotoA local from Alabama, Laurie grew up near Montgomery and attended Auburn University. Traveling is Laurie’s passion and it has motivated her to explore the world. Laurie began traveling at an early age. Taking two trips a summer with her family, she cruised through Europe, experienced zip-lining adventures in Costa Rica, and explored the Caribbean and United States. After studying and living abroad in Italy twice, earning an interior design degree from Auburn, and completing a graphic design internship in Dublin, Ireland, Laurie’s love for art, design, new experiences, and culture has intertwined in her current career.  Laurie has previously worked in international education in Denver, Colorado for two years, where she advised students, parents, and university advisors from across the United States and Canada on the right study abroad choice to fit their lifestyle. Seven years of traveling and moving around the world has lead her home, and she is excited to blend her worldly knowledge on creating spectacular events for clients. When Laurie is not working, she is spending time with family and friends and traveling to the lake.
